Irish Blessing Double Mobius Necklace
Made in the USA from Thomas & Laurel Fine Jewelry
May God Grant You Always a Sunbeam to Warm You, a Moonbeam to Charm You, a Sheltering Angel so nothing can harm you… an Irish Blessing.
The Irish are revered for the beauty of their expression, whether in Gaelic or English, and it is no surprise that Irish literature is so rich and varied. The tradition of Irish Blessings, most of which are of anonymous origin is another strand of that literary heritage. Many blessings can be traced to St Patrick’s Breastplate, and Irish hymn attributed to St Patrick and translated into English in the late nineteenth century. This blessing appears in slightly varying forms – the complete verse continues:
May God grant you always… A sunbeam to warm you, a moonbeam to charm you, a sheltering Angel so nothing can harm you. Laughter to cheer you. Faithful friends near you. And whenever you pray, Heaven to hear you.
The geometric shape of the pendant is known as a Mobius strip, after the German mathematician August Ferdinand Mobius. It represents the seeming paradox of a plane without end, or one of infinite length. As such it became an accepted mathematical symbol for infinity. The circlet will move about the chain when worn, constantly changing its appearance. Creating one shape, then another. The more one observes its seeming simplicity, the more complex it becomes.
In this case, the mobius twist has been doubled, creating a remarkable twisted knot. Wherever you choose to begin reading along its length, you will return to where you began.
All are craftman made. Each piece is accompanied by a storycard explaining the history or derivation of the inscription.
Chain: 18″ [46mm] sterling cable chain. Pendant made of .925 Sterling Silver.
